Julie Belcher

Julie Belcher, an Appalachian original, combines elements from her deep rural roots to create mixed media in a modern context that’s imbued with tradition. Hillbilly music, cut flowers from the garden, hot biscuits, it’s all here, visually sewn together like a crazy quilt. She literally fuses elements on paper into beeswax with a torch; wood cuts, textures, Victorian ornamentation, antique wood typography, photography and vintage letterpress engravings layered in translucent wax. As teacher and artist she honors the hardworking women who are her inspiration, taking as her motto, “Don’t get so busy earning your salt, that you forget the sugar.”
